We recognise that golfing enthusiasts around the world may be interested in the development of our clubhouse and the Club.
We are pleased to share with you some edited highlights of some of the discussions which have taken place at the Club Council meetings over the years.
Selected extracts from the Minutes of the Carnoustie Golf Club Council.
January 1902
The Captain was authorised to take what measures may be necessary to mitigate a blow down of smoke in the kitchen chimney.
July 1903
The Captain reported that the Golf Course Committee had authorised a telephone line connection between the Dalhousie and Caledonia Clubhouses and starters box which means members of those clubs would be able to secure starting privileges not obtainable by members of this club and the golfing public in general. The two representatives of this club protested but the Committee had confirmed the Resolution.
June 1906
The Captain and Secretary were authorised to purchase a good second hand lawnmower.
July 1906
The Secretary intimated that a lawnmower had been purchased at a cost of £1.
November 1912
The Match Secretary drew attention to the grumbling of members on account of a member playing in club competitions with lady friends. After full discussion the Club Council asked the Secretary to have a notice posted on the board that:
“All club members are requested to play with members in the club competitions from now on to the next AGM.”
March 1926
After some discussion the Secretary was empowered to get an estimate for the cutting in two of the tables in the front room in order to see if it would be a cheaper job than purchasing small tables and selling the existing ones.
1931
It was unanimously decided that members could not have the key to the piano unless they had obtained same before 9.30pm as the Club’s closing hour is 10.00pm and receiving the key at, say, 9.45pm meant that on numerous occasions it would be difficult to get members out until a good bit after closing time. This, of course, will not apply to any special occasion which may arise.
February 1942
A member proposed that any member home on leave should receive a gift of 2/6d from the Club. Unanimously agreed.
April 1946
A full discussion regarding the negligence with regard to cigarette ends and ash, and also the question of members using the chairs for putting their tumblers of beer upon. It was decided that the Secretary arrange for a sample stool to fit in with the tables for the purpose of holding glasses of beer.
May 1947
The Captain intimated that the special meeting had been called in view of the severe cut in whisky supplies and to decide what the Council was to do. After discussion, the Secretary proposed that the spirits be off every day to Thursday, that either a half noggin of rum or gin could be had on Fridays and two half noggins on Saturdays. An amendment was moved that that one half noggin of whisky to be had on Tuesday, a half noggin of rum or gin on Friday and one half noggin of whisky on Saturday. The motion was carried.
October 1947
It was agreed that no whisky be sold in November to conserve supplies for the New Year.
