Supporting Golf throughout the World
But golf is about players and courses, not just about buildings.
In this respect the Carnoustie Golf Club also stakes a major claim in the development of the game in the past and the present in every area of the world.
Between the late 1800s and early 1900s, it is estimated that around 300 of our members left Carnoustie and travelled extensively throughout the world to play and teach the great game.
Indeed, our members were instrumental in creating the United States P.G.A. and the Australian P.G.A.
In recognition of this fact, our Club has been granted the privilege of incorporating the crests of these great organisations into our welcome sign at the entrance to the Club.
The famous Smith brothers, Alex, Willie and of course MacDonald between them won most, if not all of the professional tournaments in the USA during their extensive golfing careers.
The Carnoustie Golf Club is proud to display the results of their victories - including two U.S. Open winners medals – within our clubhouse.
Stewart Maiden - who taught the legendary Bobby Jones to play golf - has his name inscribed on one of our Club’s trophies.
This great tradition of golfing excellence has continued with numerous national titles and international caps, at all levels of the game, being won by Carnoustie Club members.
Today, our Golf Club remains justifiably proud of the important role which our members have played in introducing the game of golf to so many different countries throughout the world.
We recognise and respect the fact that our game remains as important today as it did when our Club was first established.
Above all, we believe that our club and course remain places where those who love the game of golf, cherish its history and respect its traditions, will always be welcome.
Further recognition of the significant contribution of our golf club to the game throughout the world is summarised in the testimonials below:
“The Carnoustie Golf Club has assisted the Scottish Golf Union in many ways and has provided a much needed “home” for not only officials but for the many competitors who have played in the numerous championships held over your world renowned links.”
GB Ovens, President Scottish Golf Union January 1992.
“The Carnoustie Golf Club has made a great contribution to the World of Golf, especially when major championships have been held on its world famous links.”
“Not many golf clubs have given so much to the game over such a long period, as Carnoustie Golf Club... names are almost too invidious to mention but from the great amateur Robert Harris and the Simpson brothers, MacDonald Smith through to Wallace McArthur and Ralph Duncan, down to David Greig, the Mann brothers and the Vannet brothers...your club has made a great contribution to amateur and professional golf at home and abroad, and this has not solely been confined to the playing of the game but also to the design and maintenance of courses.”
John M Calder, Chairman Carnoustie Golf Links Management Committee, November 1991.
“Since 1842, the rich tradition of the Carnoustie Golf Club has had a positive impact on golf. As host to the prestigious British Open, your club has become legendary throughout the world...in fact, former Carnoustie professionals were among our 82 founding fathers in 1916. Certainly we are grateful for their dedicated contributions to our Association.”
Dick Smith, President of the PGA of America, December 1991
