Buddon Links

The Buddon LinksBuddon Links is a relatively new golf course having been opened in 1979.

It was designed by Peter Allis and Davis Thomas although there have been significant changes since.

As would be expected given its location, it is an excellent example of links golf.  Although shorter than the Burnside it still packs a pretty hefty punch around the turn with the 7th, 9th, 11th & 12th holes all testing the players accuracy and control.

The Buddon Links is a fine complement to the Championship course and it is worth a player considering 18 holes over the Buddon Links as an introduction to links golf prior to tackling the more demanding Championship course.

Hole 1 - St Valery

284 Yards - Par 4 - Stroke Index 13
A wide fairway and a hole of less than 300 yards makes this a very straightforward introduction to the Buddon Links course.

Hole 2 - Alma

427 Yards - Par 4 - Stroke Index 3
The wide fairway is deceptive, as anything too far left will leave a blind 2nd shot to a well-protected green.
Equally a drive pushed right will find very thick rough and the player will be unlikely to get up in 2.
The approach requires a very well struck shot to a slightly raised green and a 4 here is very welcome.

Hole 3 - Corunna

172 Yards - Par 3 - Stroke Index 11
Downwind this hole does not pose too many problems, but into the wind you could be going in with a 3 or 4 iron.
Anything leaking to the right will be in danger of the out of bounds and the large mound on the left of the green is to be avoided at all costs.

Hole 4 - Wadi Akarit

390 Yards - Par 4 - Stroke Index 5
Although the fairway is reasonably wide the 2nd shot to this par 4 is a testing one with water hard up against the green on the left hand side and anything going left will result in penalty shots.

Hole 5 - Ypres

160 Yards - Par 3 - Stroke Index 17
A tricky par 3 with trees and bushes on the left hand side of the green, a solidly struck short iron should see a par 3 secured however.

Hole 6 - Kohima

332 Yards - Par 4 - Stroke Index 9
Two cleverly positioned pot bunkers will trap the careless drive and a ditch and the out of bounds fence protect the right hand side of this hole.
If the pin is behind the 2 greenside bunkers then the approach shot is a difficult one to get close.

Hole 7 - Vimy

405 Yards - Par 4 - Stroke Index 1
A very difficult drive with trees on both sides of the fairway and if your drive hugs the right hand side then the 2nd shot will be a blind one.
A very difficult par 4 which has been the ruin of many a scorecard.

Hole 8 - Mareth

164 Yards - Par 3 - Stroke Index 15
A long par 3 from the back tee, a ditch running in front of the green will catch any mis-hit shot.

Hole 9 - El Alamein

369 Yards - Par 4 - Stroke Index 7
Another tough driving hole with trees and bushes on the left and water on the right.
Once the fairway is found the 2nd shot is straightforward although care must be taken not to pull the ball into the trees on the left.

Hole 10 - The Hook

138 Yards - Par 3 - Stroke Index 18
A short but deceptively difficult par 3 to a huge double green, anything over hit will be straight into 3-putt country.

Hole 11 - Caen

366 Yards - Par 4 - Stroke Index 8
Any drive cutting even slightly to the right will find the water and this puts pressure on the tee shot.
The fairway is generously wide however and a good drive will leave a short pitch into a receptive green.

Hole 12 - Somme

382 Yards - Par 4 - Stroke Index 4
An awkward par 4 with a number of fairway bunkers and a ditch on the left hand side care must be taken not to over hit the green with the approach as a ditch waits just behind the green.

Hole 13 - Marne

175 Yards - Par 3 - Stroke Index 16
A long par 3 normally played into the prevailing wind a solid shot is required.
Anything mis-hit to the right will find bushes or a ditch and to the left one of the huge bunkers awaits.

Hole 14 - Waterloo

409 Yards - Par 4 - Stroke Index 2
A tough par 4 with thick rough on the left and out of bounds on the right, a long 2nd shot awaits to a narrow green and 4 is a very good result.

Hole 15 - Falaise

165 Yards - Par 3 - Stroke Index 10
An interesting par 3 with water on the right and trees on the left, the theory is miss the swails surrounding the putting surface will mean a tricky up and down.

Hole 16 - Cassino

498 Yards - Par 5 - Stroke Index 12
A par 5 which plays longer than it’s length it requires 2 very well hit shots to get home anything finding the bunkers to the right hand side of the green can easily result in a 6 or higher being scored.

Hole 17 - Tobruk

165 Yards - Par 3 - Stroke Index 14
A straightforward and fair par 3 and a good middle iron will get you home comfortably.
However there is a big gully in front of the green, which must be avoided at all costs.

Hole 18 - Rhine

419 Yards - Par 4 - Stroke Index 6
A wide and inviting fairway awaits this tee shot and should pose no difficulties.
The approach shot tends to run into the bunker on the left hand side of the green however and care must be taken to avoid this hazard.
